qi peng, conceptual artist

These series of conceptual artworks reflect a sudden shift from the switch back between abstract (graffiti-inspired) and more traditional figuration to become even more contradictory. My paintings and works on paper currently use Renaissance-like social realist depictions of various people within the contemporary art world. Some of my themes include examining the nature of appropriation art and how it fits within an art historical context, the restless search for humanity and defending the oppressed and marginalized people within history, the deconstruction of the interaction between cinema and new media technology particularly HD video and the Internet. Various long-term themes include looking at the Larry Salander case, artworks about the art world particularly about other art professionals whom I have met or not met in real life yet, as well as trying to resolve the conflict between my desire to respect art traditions while at the same time, subverting them.
